McGarry: John Bennett silence at Rangers 'Untenable' amid Ibrox row

John Bennett’s silence amid the ongoing Ibrox debacle at Rangers is “increasingly untenable”, according to Graham McGarry.

Writing in the Herald (9 July), McGarry said that with just weeks to go until the start of next season, fans are still no closer to knowing where they will be watching the Gers during redevelopment works at Ibrox.

With the last official communication from the club coming on 27 June, following the release of the Scottish Premiership fixture list, McGarry has called for answers from club chairman Bennett.

McGarry said: “Bennett is known for keeping his counsel in the best of times – but such a position is becoming increasingly untenable.

“(The situation is) exacerbating anger amongst a fanbase who feel they are being given the mushroom treatment. Except, they are barely even being fed [expletive], only being kept in the dark.

“Already, too much sand has passed through the hourglass, and it is seeping directly from the foundations he has built his reputation upon.”

Radio silence continues over Ibrox stadium debacle at Rangers

By this time next month, Philippe Clement’s side will be firmly underway in the 2024/25 campaign, but are still in the dark regarding where they’ll be playing their home matches [Barry Ferguson, 22 June].

Hampden Park and Murrayfield have been mooted as potential venues given both stadia are of a similar size to Ibrox, but both also bring time constraints which the club are rapidly running out of time to meet.

Developments to Ibrox’s Copland Road Stand have disrupted pre-season plans at Rangers

A full resurfacing of the pitch following summer concerts at Hampden leaves the Gers in a race against time for the national stadium to be ready by August, but that will undoubtedly be the fans’ first choice [Scottish Daily Mail, 6 July].

Meanwhile, Murrayfield’s Edinburgh location will necessitate careful planning as potentially over 60,000 fans make their way across the country – something that cannot be done on a whim.

Therefore, it’s quite clear that the Ibrox faithful need answers, and quickly, if the Gers boardroom is to retain any inkling of support from them. Fans shell out a lot of money to follow the Light Blues, and wherever that takes them in the autumn, Bennett and the hierarchy must make their plans clear [Gary Keown, 30 June]..
