'On the numbers I've seen...' - Stefan Borson: Newcastle could land devastating points deduction

Newcastle United could look to deliberately breach the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) to avoid selling some of their best players before 30 June.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the north-east giants do need to sell someone over the coming days to avoid a potential points deduction next season.

Bruno Guimaraes has been heavily linked with a move away from St James’ Park, but it’s now emerged his £100million release clause expired on 24 June.

Football Insider revealed on 23 June Newcastle are in advanced talks to sell Yankuba Minteh after he impressed on loan at Feyenoord last season.

But it’s unclear whether that sale would be enough to bridge the PSR gap as the Tyneside club are believed to be close to their allowable losses limit.

Newcastle could purposely breach PSR and land points deduction

Borson insisted Newcastle are currently short based on the numbers he’s seen, meaning a points deduction is on the cards if they don’t make any significant sales over the coming days.

“It’s quite interesting Newcastle,” Borson told Football Insider.

“They do look like they need to sell on paper. There are only a few days left.

“Either they have a plan B or they are preparing to deliberately fail PSR for the current season and take the penalty, which is always possible of course.

“It’s hard to say which way they are going to go. But they do look like they are short for the current season.

“It will be interesting to see what they do over the next few days. They have been surprisingly quiet I think.

“On the numbers I’ve seen, and they are only projections, but on those projections, they do seem to need to sell before 30 June.”
