Scott Allan picks Rangers ace over Celtic star for league XI, journo issues 'Alarming' Ibrox claim

John Souttar has responded really well for Rangers since the Old Firm derby defeat and deserves consideration for a Scottish Premiership best XI over Cameron Carter-Vickers, says Scott Allan.

The Kelty Hearts man said during a PLZ Soccer debate on who would make up a league’s best line-up since the start of the campaign on 9 October that the Scottish centre-back would be his top suggestion from Ibrox, with Jack Butland beaten on form by Celtic’s Kasper Schmeichel.

Peter Martin had suggested the English keeper might be the only possibility from the Light Blues amid an “alarming” situation for the Gers.

Allan said (45m 50s): “Based on since the Celtic-Rangers game I think Souttar arguably could be in there for me. I think he’s responded really well to that game and Rangers have obviously had on the back of it clean sheets, so maybe Souttar in there if any.”

“In place of Carter-Vickers?” Martin asked. “Well he’s injured isn’t he,” Allan replied.

Tam McManus agreed with Souttar in the XI after he cut in to say: “I’m not sure about Carter-Vickers”.

Martin then said: “Only Rangers player which is quite alarming”.

Unfortunately the table doesn’t lie currently with Philippe Clement’s men down in third and five points adrift of both the Hoops and Aberdeen.

In that context it is perhaps unsurprising that this work-in-progress squad at Ibrox would struggle to offer too many obvious choices for a league XI.

Souttar remains inconsistent but has improved significantly form a difficult, and injury-plagued start in Glasgow following his move from Hearts three summers ago.

The 28-year-old has a new contract on the way [Daily Record, 1 October] which is as much an attempt to avoid yet more free transfer exits in the future than a reward for his form as he has become the top option by default as much as anything, with Ben Davies proving a flop, Leon Balogun 36, and Robin Propper flattering to deceive since his arrival in place of Connor Goldson.

James Tavernier is usually the one man who could be relied upon to maintain the level of output to force his way into league’s best debates, but the captain’s form has dipped markedly.

The right-back is now facing a battle to keep his place in the Light Blues XI despite considerable support from his manager.

There have been bright spots in the Gers side so far this term and Nedim Bajrami will be in with a shout if he keeps up his strong recent form, but unless Clement can close the gap to the top there won’t be many accolades on the cards.

In other Rangers news, yet another Ibrox resignation has emerged after a “major downsizing” across all areas of the club.
